| MBC 일밤 김영희 PD와 헌터스 논란, 지켜보고 일갈해도 늦지 않다 |

늦은 밤중입니다. 할 일이 있어 컴퓨터를 켰다가 <프레시안>의 선정적인 제목을 보고 클릭했습니다. <"공익 프로그램 전문 PD가 동물살상 프로그램을?" 임순례 등 멧돼지 사냥 프로그램 '헌터스' 제작 중단 촉구>라는 기사입니다.
대충 짐작이 갑니다. 며칠전 '일밤'의 새 메가폰을 잡게 된 김영희 PD(한국PD연합회 전 회장, MBC 전 PD협회장)와 새로 신설하는 '헌터스'에 관한 내용일거라고 생각했습니다. 기사를 클릭해 보니 아니나 다를까 였습니다.
환경단체와 임순례 감독 등이 진보신당 조승수 의원을 소개로 국회 정론관에서 기자회견을 열고 '헌터스' 폐지를 촉구한다는 내용입니다. <프레시안>은 김영희 PD의 이번 공익적 프로그램을 '아니올시다'라고 판단했는지 아주 센 제목을 뽑았습니다.
결론부터 말하면, 환경단체도 그렇고, 언론들도 그렇고 6일 방송되는 '헌터스'의 첫회 내용을 지켜 본 다음, 정말 아니라면 그 때 비판해도 되지 않을까 하는 생각이 듭니다.
필자는 1년 반 정도 기간 동안 김영희 PD를 가까이에서 지켜볼 기회가 있었습니다. 그와 같은 이른 바 잘 나가는 스타PD를 평소 만날 기회가 언제 있겠습니까마는 그것이 가능했던 이유는 김영희 PD가 한국PD연합회장으로 활동하는 지난 1년, 그리고 이보다 조금 더 앞선 기간까지 포함해 언론자유의 현장과 남북언론교류 등의 현장에서 그를 만날 수 있었습니다.
필자가 지켜본 바로는 김영희 PD는 동물학대나 동물살상용 프로그램을 단순히 공익의 외피를 덮어쓴 채 재미를 제공하기 위해 프로그램을 기획해 이것저것 따져보지 않고 급조해 시청자들에게 내보낼 사람은 아니라는 것입니다.
추론을 해 보자면 아마도 김영희 PD는 갈수록 피폐해지고 있는 농촌 지역의 현실을 보면서 특히나 가을철 농민들의 주름살을 더 늘리는 원인 중의 하나로 멧돼지 문제에 대해서 주목했고, 이를 방송을 통해 보여줌으로써 농촌과 이 땅의 삶에 대해서 돌아보고자 하는 의도로 ‘헌터스’를 기획한 것이 아닌가 하는 것이 필자의 판단입니다.
물론 김영희 PD는 환경단체의 주장처럼 멧돼지 등이 왜 그렇게 민가나 경작지 등으로 내려와서 피해를 입히고 있는지 그 근본적인 원인이라 할 수 있는 생태계 파괴에 대해서도 반드시 짚을 것이라고 봅니다. 필자가 아는 ‘쌀집아저씨’(김영희 PD의 별명)는 그렇게 허술한 사람이 아닙니다. 그는 결코 단발마적인 방송 프로그램의 아이디어를 짜내서 급조한 버라이어티 쇼로 시청률이나 올린 다음 다른 곳으로 튀는 ‘떴다방’이나 할 사람은 아니기 때문입니다. 그렇지 않을 사람이라는 근거는 여러 가지 이야기를 통해서 논의해 볼 수 있지만 이 글의 목적이 김영희 PD 개인과 '헌터스’를 옹호하기 위한 것이 아니므로 여기서 생략하고자 합니다.
환경단체가 급하게 ‘헌터스’ 중단을 촉구하고 나선 까닭은 김 PD의 일밤 기자회견을 지켜본 임순례 감독이 ‘이건 아니다’라며 지인 등에게 연락을 해서 조승수 진보신당 의원의 소개로 국회 정론관에서 기자회견을 열게 된 것으로 언론은 보도하고 있습니다. 임순례 감독의 면면을 볼 때 그 역시도 숙고 끝에 행동에 나선 것이라 봅니다. 그리고 기자회견에 참석한 인사들의 면면을 볼 때 개인적 관계도 있고, 필자 역시 환경단체들의 경종어린 호소에 주목하지 않을 수 없습니다. 생태계 파괴와 멧돼지의 행동의 근본적인 문제점을 외면하고서 일방적으로 퇴치작전만을 강조하는 정부와 사회 일각의 주장은 분명 잘못된 면이 있습니다.
그러나 아쉬운 점이 몇 가지가 남습니다.
첫 번째는 ‘헌터스’ 첫 회 방송을 지켜본 다음에 ‘정말 아니올시다’라면 비판의 칼날을 들어도 늦지 않을 것이라는 생각입니다. 즉 문제 제기의 시점이 너무 앞선 것이 아닌가 하는 의견입니다. ‘헌터스’가 첫 방송을 하기도 전에 서둘러서 프로그램을 폐지하자고 해 버리면 제작자들의 방송 제작에 대한 자율성과 창작의 자유를 위축시키는 결과를 가져올 것입니다. 반론을 할 수 있습니다. 그것이 공익적으로 문제가 되는 사안이고, 분명 잘못된 프로그램이라는 심정이 있다면 더 큰 문제를 불러오기 전에 폐지하는 것이 낫다고 말할 수 있습니다.
그러나 필자가 보기엔 이건 ‘사전검열’의 또 다른 이름이 될 수 있다는 걱정이 앞섭니다. 필자가 알기론 근 2년 넘게 현장을 떠나 있다가 복귀하는 PD가 제작하는 방송 프로그램이 첫 방송도 나가기 전에 ‘폐지하라’는 압력에 시달리게 된다면 그 어떤 방송인이 자신의 양심과 신념, 창작의 자유와 독창성을 갖고 방송 프로그램을 기획하고, 심혈을 기울여서 방송에 나서겠습니까? 필자가 우려하는 지점은 여기에 있습니다.
두 번째는 환경단체 등이 ‘헌터스’ 중단의 논거로 제기하는 환경부의 얼렁뚱땅한 멧돼지 퇴치 정책에 편승해 김영희 PD가 일밤에서 ‘헌터스’를 신설한 것이라는 대목입니다. 과연 그러할까요? 김영희 PD에게 직접 확인이라도 해 보고 그렇게 주장하는 것인지 솔직히 의문이 듭니다. 환경부의 멧돼지 퇴치 정책이 문제일 수 있습니다. 그리고 정부의 잘못된 정책을 기자회견을 통해서 꼬집는 것도 필요합니다.
그러나 언론보도를 보면 환경부의 멧돼지 퇴치 정책의 문제점보다는 김영희 PD와 헌터스 논란에 보도의 초점이 맞춰지고 있습니다. 기자회견을 연 환경단체 등의 문제라고 할 순 없겠지만, 김영희 PD가 환경부의 잘못된 멧돼지 퇴치 정책에 편승해 ‘헌터스’를 신설했다고 몰아붙이기엔 너무나 근거가 없어 보입니다. 매듭짓자면 필자가 보기엔 소통 부재가 가져온 오해가 양자 간에 존재하는 듯 합니다. 환경부 멧돼지 퇴치 정책의 문제점과 김영희 PD의 헌터스에 대한 문제 제기는 분명히 다른 사안입니다. 기자회견을 통해서 정부 정책의 문제점을 공론화하려는 기자회견 개최자의 심정을 십분 이해한다고 해도 쉽게 동의하기 어려운 지점입니다.
김영희 PD 개인과 헌터스를 결코 옹호하고자 함이 아닙니다. 환경단체 등의 기자회견에서는 이 두 가지 지점에 관한 배려가 엿보이지 않습니다. 그래서 많이 아쉽습니다.
정말 잡아야 할 것은 멧돼지뿐만 아닙니다. ‘법치’를 강요하면서 국회 법 절차를 어기면서까지 미디어법을 불법처리한 정치권도 그렇고, 지난 정권에서 여야 합의로 제정한 행정도시특별법을 개폐도 하지 않고 세종시를 백지화하려는 정부여당도 그렇고, 멀쩡한 4대강 바닥을 파헤치면서 건설경기 부양에 나선 이 나라의 최고 권력자의 모습도 그렇고, 잘못된 것이 너무나 많습니다. 그렇다고 그 모든 잘못을 다 때려잡기에는 역부족입니다.
정말 잡아야 할 유해물들을 놓아두고 엉뚱한 산짐승을 때려잡는 이야기가 공익 오락 프로그램이라는 미명 하에 버젓하게 방송되어서는 안 되겠습니다. 그럴 요량이라면 김영희 PD도 그렇고 ‘헌터스’도 그렇고 ‘MBC’도 그렇고 모두 더 큰 논란을 불러일으키기 전에 퇴출해야 합니다.
그러나 뚜껑도 열어보지도 않고서 집중포화로 ‘공익 프로그램 PD가 동물살상용 프로그램을 기획했다는 식으로 “폐지하라”고 압력을 가한다면, 그 누가 방송예능인의 양심과 창작적 자유를 걸고서 진짜 공익 프로그램 개발에 나서겠습니까?
<느낌표>의 책 등 공익 예능 프로그램 개발과 정착에 개척자 역할을 해 온 쌀집아저씨, 김영희 PD가 걸어온 길을 보면 그는 결코 ‘헛투르게(헛되고 서투르게)’ 멧돼지 때려잡기나 즐기면서 시청자들의 동물 가학적 심리를 자극시킬 사람이 아니라는 게 필자의 생각입니다.
부디 필자의 생각이 잘못 되지 않기만을 바랄 뿐입니다.
‘헌터스’와 김영희 PD는 첫 회 방송을 내보내기도 전에 아주 세게 얻어맞았습니다. 김 PD 도 ‘예전의 시청자, 시민단체들이 아니구나’ 하고 많이 느꼈을 것입니다. 그리고 좋은 비판은 앞으로 프로그램 방향에 긍정의 자양분이 될 것입니다.
동물생태계 보호에 나선 환경단체들과 ‘헌터스’ 등(개편된 일밤에는 ‘단비’ 등 다른 프로그램도 많습니다)을 통해서 새로운 공익 예능 프로그램의 현재와 미래를 개척하고자 하는 김영희 PD 모두 승리하길 바랍니다. 그리고 이러한 비판과 응답의 문화, 고침과 새롭게 나아감의 문화가 우리 사회 전반에 큰 파도가 되어 이어지길 기대합니다.
끝으로 사족이지만 비판을 제기한 이들과 비판을 받고 있는 측 모두, 항상 ‘진보주의자’들이 말하는 소위 ‘낡은 수구’들의 인신공격성 비난이나 비겁한 변명, 말 바꾸기 따위와 같은 수법을 답습하지는 말았으면 좋겠습니다. 언제부터인가 ‘과거를 벗어나지 못하는 낡은 수구’와 ‘미래가 안 보이는 자기 정형화에 빠진 퇴행적 진보주의자’들은 공격과 방어에서 본질적으로 서로가 하등 다를 바가 하나도 없다는 것이 필자의 인식입니다.
새롭게 공부하지 않고, 배우지 않고, 현재에 머무르면서 자기 주의주장만을 앞세우고, 도무지 일하는 사람들의 민의와 소통하지 않고, 시대의 요구에 응답하지 않고 고치지 않는 자는 미래로 나아갈 수 없습니다. 그러한 사람이 누구인지는 굳이 말하지 않아도 잘 알 것입니다. 멧돼지는 본능에 따라 움직일 뿐이지만, 사람은 그렇지 않습니다. 알면서도 고치지 않는 사람은 짐승만도 못한 사람일 것입니다. 잡아야 할 것은 멧돼지뿐만이 아닙니다.

그런데 기사 내용중에 '단발마'라는 단어는 잘못 쓰신것 같네요. 비명을 지를때, "악" 하고 한마디로 지르는 비명을 '단말마의 비명'라는 표현을 씁니다.
