‘2009 멀티 문학상’ 수상작 김이환 <절망의 구> 선정 - 심사위원장 이외수, “뛰어난 이야기꾼 탄생 예감”
7월 27일 ‘2009 멀티 문학상’ 사무국은, 공모 당시부터 “One Source Multi Use”라는 기치를 내걸고, 원천 콘텐츠 발굴을 표방하며 화제를 모았던, 1억 원 고료 ‘2009 멀티 문학상’의 피날레를 장식하는 수상작을 발표했다.
사무국에 따르면, 지난 4월 30일 총 448편이 응모된 것으로 공식 집계됐으며, 6월 10일 ‘출판-방송-영화’ 3개 영역의 예심 심사위원 9인이 21편의 본선작품을 확정했다. 6월 11일부터 본심이 본격화됐으며, 1개월여 동안의 본심을 거쳐 지난 7월 9일 최종 심사회의에서 수상작이 선정됐다.
심사위원장 이외수(소설가)를 주축으로 하여, 드라마 PD 고흥식(SBS CP), 영화감독 김대우(‘음란서생’), 소설가 정이현(‘달콤한 나의 도시’) 등 총 4인이 참석한 가운데, 수상작으로 김이환의 <절망의 구>를 최종 선정했다. 본선에 오른 총 21편 중 심사위원들이 주목한 작품이 4개로 압축된 가운데, 심사위원 만장일치로 수상이 결정됐다.
심사를 맡은 김대우 영화감독이 “심사하는 동안 이 작품을 만날 수 있어서 다행”이라는 소감을 피력했을 정도로, 수상작은 예심부터 화제가 됐던 작품이다.
당선작 선정 직후 이외수 심사위원장은 “그동안 상대적으로 주목받지 못했던 장르문학에서 당선작이 나온 사실만으로도 반가운 일이다”라면서, “앞으로 ‘멀티 문학상’이 회를 거듭하면서 명실 공히 새로운 가능성과 다양성을 보여주는 공간으로 거듭나는데 초석이 될 작품으로 기대해본다”라고 소감을 밝혔다.
첫 ‘멀티 문학상’의 당선을 거머쥔 김이환 씨는 온라인 포털 다음(daum.net)에서 소설을 연재하고 있으며, 뜨거운 반응을 얻고 있는 작가이기도 하다. 작가는 “얼마 전부터 사람들이 정치적으로, 경제적으로 그리고 감정적으로 불안에 시달린다는 인상을 받았으며, 무언가에 쫓기는 것 같고, 공포의 정체는 찾아내지 못하는 것 같았다”라며, “우리를 불안하게 하는 것은 무엇인지, 개인적인 문제인지, 사회적 문제인지, 그렇다면 어떻게 해결해야 하는지, 고민이 담긴 글”이라며 수상의 변을 밝혔다.
<절망의 구>는 어느 날 갑자기 정체 모를 ‘공’이 지구에 나타나며, 사람들을 빨아들이는 사건에서 출발하는 판타지적인 구성을 지닌 장편소설이다. 심사위원들은 심사평을 통해 “주인공을 위협하는 ‘공’은 아주 급박하게, 그러나 동시에 아주 천천히 읽는 이를 압박해온다. 어느 순간 정신을 차려보면 숨을 쉴 수가 없다. 지구에 대위기 상황이 닥쳤는데, 결국 오롯이 남는 것은 고독하고 나약한 한 명의 개인이라는 결론이 가슴을 친다. 그렇다면 소설에서 가정해놓은 지구적 위기상황은 하나의 거대한 은유인지도 모른다. 모처럼 만나는 역작이다”라며 작품을 평했다.
수상작은 ‘2009 멀티 문학상’ 출판 관련 주최사인 ‘위즈덤하우스’가 맡아 8월 중순경 단행본으로 출간하며, 타 주최사인 ‘SBS’와 ‘쇼박스’는 드라마와 영화 콘텐츠 개발 여부에 관한 검토에 나서게 된다. 시상식은 8월 7일 오후 5시 서울 프레스센터에서 개최된다.

“뛰어난 이야기꾼의 탄생 예감”
<2009 멀티 문학상>에는 모두 448편이 응모되었다. 이 중 본선에 올라온 작품은 총 21편이었다. 수상작을 단행본으로 출간하는 것에 그치지 않고 ‘원천 콘텐츠’화하여 여러 장르로 개발하겠다는 문학상 취지에 걸맞게, 기존 문학상의 응모작과는 차별화되는 다양한 작품이 여럿 보여 심사에 즐거움을 더했다. 아무래도 첫 잔치이기 때문인지 ‘문학’상이라는 이름과 어울리지 않는 소설, 즉 소설의 기본기에 충실하지 못한 작품들이 더러 눈에 띄기도 하였으나, 이는 첫 수상작이 출간되어 <멀티 문학상>에 대한 나름대로의 정체성이 확립되고 나면 해결될 문제라고 생각된다.
본심에서 심사위원들이 주목한 작품은 네 편이었다.
<20세기 소년>은 특유의 발칙한 상상력으로 눈길을 끌었다. 경쾌하고 발랄한 일인칭 화법으로 이야기를 전개해 나가면서도, 현대 정보 사회를 부유하며 살아가는 개인의 삶을 냉정히 응시하는 작가의 시선이 만만치 않다. 그러나 날카로운 주제의식에 비해 병렬적으로 제시되는 에피소드들이 산만하고 무게감이 떨어졌다. 소설은 분명 ‘하나의 반짝이는 착상’으로부터 시작되지만 작품의 전체적인 완성도를 위해서는 그 이상의 것이 필요하다. 작가가 이 점을 보다 집요하게 물고 늘어진다면 곧 지금보다 더 좋은 작품으로 다시 만날 수 있으리라 생각된다.
<초희>는 작가가 오랜 시간 습작을 해온 듯 비교적 안정된 문장 구사력과 정확한 묘사력이 인상적이었다. 이 작품에서 다루고 있는 허난설헌의 삶은 오늘날 독자들에게도 분명 매력적으로 다가온다. 그러나 그녀의 삶이 21세기를 살아가는 우리들에게 과연 어떤 새로운 의미를 줄 수 있을 것인지 작품을 통해 충분히 설득하지 못했다는 점에서는 아쉬웠다. 또한 처음부터 끝까지 무난하게 읽혔으나 그 무난함이 소설적 재미로 이어지지는 못하였다.
<D등급 그녀>는 끝까지 선자들의 관심을 끈 작품이었다. 한 심사위원이 “1990년대에 엽기적인 그녀가 있었다면, 이제는 D등급 그녀다”라고 언급했듯이, 더욱 어려워진 경제현실에서 스스로 D등급이라고 자조할 수밖에 없는 20대 여성의 모습을 통해 21세기 청춘의 한 단면을 예리하게 포착했다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 개성 있는 캐릭터와 맛깔스러운 대사 등도 눈길을 끌었다. 그렇지만 전체적인 문학적 완성도 면에서 지나치게 소박한 수준에 머무른다는 것이 중평이었다. 지금 당장 미니시리즈 드라마로 각색해도 손색이 없겠다는 의견도 나왔으나, 문학의 이름으로 상이 수여되는 작품이라면 일정 수준 이상의 문장력과 최소한의 소설적 구성력은 전제되어야 하지 않겠느냐는 의견이 설득력을 얻었다. 앞부분에 비해 뒤로 갈수록 재미와 완성도가 떨어진다는 점도 단점으로 지적되었다.
<절망의 구>는 예심에서부터 화제가 되었던 작품이다. 작품 전체를 관통하는 무게감이 과연 다른 투고작들과는 확연히 달랐다. 한 심사위원이 “이 작품을 만날 수 있어서 다행”이라는 소감을 피력했을 만큼, 가장 좋은 작품 하나를 서둘러 발견해야 한다는 부담감에서 선자들을 자유롭게 해준 작품이기도 하다.

얼마 전부터 사람들이 정치적으로, 경제적으로 그리고 감정적으로 불안에 시달린다는 인상을 받았습니다. 무언가에 쫓기는 것 같고, 공포의 정체는 찾아내지 못하는 것 같았습니다. 우리를 불안하게 하는 것은 무엇인가, 개인적인 문제인가, 사회적 문제인가? 그렇다면 어떻게 해결해야 하는가? 그 시간을 보내며 해온 고민이 글에 담겨 있습니다. 상당히 오래전부터 계획해온 글이었고, 한편으로 오랫동안 시작할 엄두를 내지 못해온 글이었지만, 지금 이 시기가 아니면 이런 글을 쓸 수 없다는 느낌이 들어 6 개월간의 집필 과정 끝에 결국 글을 완성했습니다.
작가가 한 편의 글을 쓰기 위해서는 주변 사람들이 감정적으로, 물질적으로 희생하기 마련입니다. 제가 이 글을 쓰는 동안은 가족이 희생자 역할을 맡았습니다. 처음 작가가 되겠다고 결심했을 때부터 근심도 기대도 많으셨던 부모님과 많은 도움을 준 남동생에게 감사의 말을 하고 싶습니다. 정말 그 감사를 모두 표현할 방법이 없습니다.
제 생활의 사소한 것 하나하나까지 챙겨주는 친구들에게도 고맙다고 전하고 싶습니다. 그들의 지지가 없었다면 지금의 제가 없었을 것입니다.
창작의 어려움 때문에 고민에 빠져 있을 때 아낌없는 조언과 격려를 보낸 동료 작가들에게도 고맙다는 말을 전합니다. 저도 언젠가 동료 작가들에게 큰 힘이 되고 싶습니다.
지난 몇 년간 글을 쓰면서 가장 어려웠던 것은 확신이었습니다. 내가 표현하고 싶은 감정을 글이 온전히 담고 있는가? 그리고 글을 읽는 누군가에게 그 감정을 정확히 전달하는가? 마지막 문장을 쓰고 마침표를 찍는 순간까지도 이 점에 대한 확신을 가지기 어려웠습니다. 이 부족한 글에 높은 평가를 내려주신 심사위원님들에게도 감사드립니다. 정말로 쉽지 않은 결정이었으리라 생각합니다. 저의 글이 모든 사람의 기대에 부응했으면 하는 마음뿐입니다.

이름 김이환. 78년 생. 남자. 경희대 경제학과 졸업 후 본격적으로 글쓰기를 시작했다. 로저 젤라즈니, 아서 클라크, 로버트 하인라인, 앨리너 파전, 레이먼드 카버, 조앤 롤링, 얀 마텔을 좋아한다. 판타지, SF, 동화 등 좋아하는 모든 장르를 아우르는 글을 쓰는 것이 목표이다.
2004년 첫 장편소설 <에비터젠의 유령>을 발표한 이후, 2007년 <양말 줍는 소년>, 2008년 <오후 다섯 시의 외계인> 등의 장편 소설을 내놓았으며 2008년 공동단편집 <한국 환상문학단편선>에 참가하기도 했다. 2009년 현재 네 번째 장편소설 <집으로 돌아가는 길>의 출간을 앞두고 있고, 세편의 공동단편집 또한 준비 중이다. 본명만큼이나 많이 사용하는 인터넷 닉네임 ‘콜린’은 영화배우 콜린 패럴에서 가져왔다. 독립영화를 좋아하여 독립영화 계간 비평지인 <독립영화>에 독립영화 평론을 발표해왔다.
