<독설닷컴>의 고재열 대표(시사인 기자)의 유명세를 이용해 블로그질을 하려던 나의 계획은 답보상태다. 고 대표의 도움을 받아서 <독설닷컴>에 게시판을 하나 설치했지만 현재까지 글이 두 개 올라가 있는 상태다. 낯뜨겁지 않을 수 없다. 그래도 게시판을 폐쇄하지 않고 있는 고 대표께 고맙다. 이제부터는 뭔가 쓰고 싶은 글, 하고 싶은 말이 있을 때 간단 간단하게 글을 올리고자 한다. 네이버에도 블로그가 있긴 하지만 요즘은 거의 글을 올리지 못했다. 내가 경험하고 있는 언론계의 소소한 이야기부터 다루어보고자 한다.
방송 출연(?)한 지 한참 됐는데 지난 주초에 KBS에서 전화가 왔다. <미디어비평> 팀이란다. 웬일인가 싶어 전화를 받았다. 이번주(4월 3일) 미디어비평에서 인터넷매체의 왜곡보도 문제를 다룬다고 한다. 김성모 기자님(이하 님 생략)의 얘기를 들어보니 '허허, 이거 인터넷매체 조지는 꼭지네' 인터뷰를 거부할까? 망설여졌다. 한편에서 지난해 불거진 KBS 사장 교체 사태 이후 KBS 뉴스보도가 보이는 정치적 편향성과 보신적 행태가 마음에 들지도 않은 면도 작용했다. 하지만 속내는 말할 수 없고 달리 겉으로 인터뷰 거부를 할 핑게거리도 없어서 응하기로 했다.
취재는 3월 30일 화요일에 이루어졌다. 김성모 기자와 방송카메라 기자들께서 프레스센터에 있는 언론연대 사무실로 찾아왔고, 그곳에서 10여 분 인터뷰를 했다. 인터뷰 이외에도 이러 저러한 이야기를 조금 나누었다. 그리고 며칠 뒤 금요일(4.3) 밤 11시 30분 kbs 1TV에서 하는 <미디어비평>을 시청했다.
- 초짜 시절에는 방송국에서 취재를 해 가면 지인들에게 알렸다. 인터뷰 나온다고. 그런데 몇 번 물먹었다. 인터뷰 해 놓고 편집에서 잘리거나 방영되지 않는 일이 간혹 있었다. 그 이후론 방송에 인터뷰했으니 봐라는 얘기를 사전에 하지 않는다. 방송이란 게 나와야지 나온 것이지 사전에 괞히 나온다고 사람들에게 말했다가 나오지 않으면 챙피 당하기 십상이다. -
이날 첫번째 꼭지는 [이슈&비평] '스포츠뉴스에 묻힌 방송 저널리즘' 이었다. wbc와 김연아 피겨우승에 온통 몰입한 방송사들의 행태를 꼬집는 내용이었다. 나름 괜찮게 만들었다는 생각이 들었다.
다음 꼭지가 바로 '[뉴스 in 뉴스] 인터넷 매체 ‘왜곡 보도’ 위험수위 넘었다'였다. 프로그램 후반부에 나의 인터뷰 장면이 나왔다. 잔뜩 징그린 얼굴로 인터뷰하는 장면은, 내가 봐도 보기에 좋지 않았다. 심각하게 얘기하는 대목이었기 때문인지 몰라도. 허허 인터뷰를 다시 할 수도 없고, 이미 방송에 나가 버렸는데... 내가 정리해 네이버 측에 보낸 한국인터넷기자협회의 '네이버 뉴스캐스트 정책 제안' 공문과 본문 내용도 화면에 일부 잡아주었다.
연예인 등의 가십성 발언 등을 왜곡 보도하는 인터넷매체의 문제점을 다룬 것이었는데 한번은 짚어야 할 내용이란 생각이 들었다. 하지만 전반적으로 인터넷매체가 선정적인 제목이나 내용을 담은 자극적인 기사를 내보내는 근본 원인과 대책에 대해서는 소홀하게 다룬 듯 했다. 시간상 제약도 있겠지만 아쉬웠다.
현재 인터넷매체 1300개!!!
한국에는 지금 인터넷매체가 넘쳐나고 있다. 인터넷의 대중화와 인터넷신문 틀을 손쉽게 제공받을 수 있는 환경 덕분에 시도에 등록한 인터넷매체만도 1,300여 개에 달하고 있다.
특히 수년전 스포츠신문 포털 뉴스 독점 계약 파문으로 스포츠와 연예 등을 다루는 인터넷신문이 속속 창간되면서 인터넷신문의 선정적인 보도는 날이 갈수록 늘고 있다. 대다수 인터넷신문이 돈을 버는 방법은 단순하다. 인터넷신문을 차려놓고 독자를 유인해 기사를 보게 하고, 기사나 홈페이지 등에 삽입된 광고 등을 클릭하게 해야 한다. 그렇다보니 독자들이 많이 보는 연성 기사, 이슈 기사 생산에 인터넷매체는 매달릴 수밖에 없다. 무엇보다 한국적 토양에서의 인터넷 저널리즘의 정착과 제고가 수준 높게 이뤄지기도 전에 인터넷매체는 이미 또다른 뉴미디어 매체와 경쟁을 해야 하는 상황에 직면했다. 그렇다보니 주목도가 높은 기사(주로 제목에서 결정된다)를 집중 배치해 네티즌 방문자를 유도하고, 클릭수 높이기에 몰두하게 된다. 별다른 수익모델이 없는 인터넷매체가 대부분 좇는 방식이다. 이런 상황이 반복되다 보니 다수 인터넷신문의 저널리즘이 거의 황색 저널리즘 수준이 되어 가는 것이다. 나쁘게 말하면 일부 인터넷신문은 쓰레기 같은 기사를 생산하고 있지만 반대로 말하면 먹고 살기 위해서 앵벌이 짓도 마다하지 않는 것이다. 특단의 대책이 없는 한 이같은 현상은 계속 지속될 것이다.
독립형 인터넷신문이나 일간지 자회사 닷컴이나 온/오프라인 통합형 매체나 다를 바 없다. 그런데 한 가지만 더 꼬집자면 한겨레, 경향 같은 매체나 조중동 같은 매체나 너나 할 것 없이 닷컴사 홈페이지에 들어가 보면 게시판에 자극적인 글과 사진 등으로 도배되어 있다. 이들 메이저 언론사 홈페이지도 예외없이 앵벌이 짓을 하고 있는 것이다. 왜? 먹고 살기 위해서이다. 기사만으로는 방문자를 유도할 수 없다. 음담패설이나 유명 연예인, 스타 등에 관한 자극적인 이야기와 사진 등으로 이용자들을 낚아 올리고 있는 것이다.
다시 <미디어비평> 이야기로 돌아오자. 다소 아쉽긴 했지만 필요한 꼭지를 보도했다는 생각에 인터뷰를 한 김성모 기자와 이메일을 주고 받았다. <미디어비평>을 본 비평 이야기를 조금 하고, 앞으로도 인터넷매체에 대해서도 많은 기획과 보도를 해 달라는 이야기를 보냈고, 김 기자도 답장을 해 주었다.
그런데 4월 6일 또 전화가 왔다. <미디어비평> 팀의 김상협 기자님(이하 님 생략)이었다. 이번엔 '뉴스통신진흥법' 문제를 다룬다고 했다. 허참, 방송에 나가서까지 뉴스통신진흥법 문제에 대해서 왈가왈부 하고 싶지 않는데... '알겠다'고 했다. 인터뷰는 4월 7일 화요일 언론연대 사무실에서 이루어졌다. 뉴스통신진흥법에 관해서 10여 분 이야기했다. 김 기자가 여러 질문을 하셨다. 질문에 관한 답변을 하고도 몇 가지 더 이야기하다보니 길어졌다. 그 |
