[성명] 언론자유 부정하는 경찰청은 공식 사과하라!
- '인터넷기자협회'가 불법폭력단체? 사실왜곡 즉각 중단하라!
경찰청이 통일부 등 관계 부처에 배포한 ‘2008년 불법폭력시위 관련 단체현황’ 명단에 '한국인터넷기자협회'가 포함된 사실이 드러났다. 본회뿐만 아니라 한국기자협회, 한국PD연합회, 한국방송기술인연합회, 전국언론노동조합 등 현업언론인 직능단체까지 대거 포함되었다.
한국인터넷기자협회는 놀라움과 더불어 충격을 금할 수 없다. 경찰이 시민의 생명과 재산권 보호 등 본연의 기본 역할을 하지 않고, 언제부터 언론단체까지 불법폭력시위 단체로 둔갑시키는 기괴한 역할을 하게 되었는지 의구심과 함께 자괴감이 들 정도이다.
한국인터넷기자협회는 폭력시위를 찬성하지도 않을 뿐만 아니라, 불법폭력시위와도 아무런 연관이 없음을 분명히 밝히고자 한다.
본회는 인터넷언론과 전문언론 등 언론의 공익적 역할을 다하기 위해 만들어진 현업 언론단체이며 경찰청이 규정하는 불법폭력시위와는 아무런 관련성이 없다. 특히 본회는 정부 보조금 교부 대상도 아니며 이와 아무런 연관성이 없다. 본회는 지난 2002년 9월 28일 창립한 이래 노무현 前 정권은 물론이거니와 현 이명박 정권에서도 정부로부터 단돈 1원이라도 보조금을 지원받은 사실이 없다.
그럼에도 불구하고 경찰청이 '정부 보조금' 운운하면서 본회를 '불법폭력시위 단체' 리스트에 포함시킨 행태야말로 그 의도가 어디에 있는지 의혹을 자아내게 한다.
혹시 정부여당이 'MB악법'이라고 국민적 지탄을 받고 있는 '미디어관계법'을 강행처리하기 위해서, 언론진영의 도덕성을 와해할 목적으로 본회를 포함한 언론단체까지 싸잡아서 불법폭력단체로 둔갑시킨 것이 아닌지 묻고 싶을 정도다.
경찰청이 광우병대책위 등의 일부 활동을 문제 삼아서 언론단체를 포함한 1,800여개에 달하는 시민사회단체를 불법폭력시위단체로 규정한 것은 이들 단체의 명예를 훼손하는 극악한 처사일뿐만 아니라 이들 단체의 자유로운 존립마저도 부정하겠다는 의도에 다름 아니라고 생각한다.
한국인터넷기자협회는 본회를 불법폭력시위 단체로 규정한 경찰청에 대해서 엄중히 항의하며 이를 강력히 규탄한다. 본회는 경찰청이 우리 단체에 가한 명예훼손과 공적 신뢰 실추 행위에 대해서 유감의 뜻을 밝히며 강력히 대응하고자 한다.
따라서 본회는 경찰청장의 사과를 요구하며 즉시 '2008년 불법폭력시위 관련 단체 현황' 리스트를 폐기처분하고, 대국민 사과를 표명할 것을 촉구한다.
경찰청의 공식 사과와 관계자 문책, 재발방지 등 모든 노력을 다해서 본회를 포함한 언론단체 등의 실추된 명예를 원상 회복시켜 줄 것을 경찰청장에 강력히 요구한다.
자유 민주주의 사회의 근간은 '언론의 자유'에 있다. 어떠한 정권이라도 언론의 자유와 언론단체의 자유로운 공공의 이익을 위한 공적 활동을 부정하여서는 안 된다. 특히 권력기구들은 아무런 근거도 없이, 정략적인 의도로 언론인들을 불법폭력단체로 몰아서 탄압하는 행위를 중단해야 한다. 그렇게 해서는 민주주의 국가에서 국민의 더 나은 행복과 언론자유, 민주주의의 발전을 위한 내일을 결코 기약할 수 없다.
