한국인터넷기자협회를 비롯 새언론포럼과 언론광장, 언론노조 등 11개 언론단체가 지난 4월 13일부터 공동 개최한 <MB정권의 언론탄압과 민주주의의 위기> 연속 토론회가 종료되었다.
이번 토론회는 총 4회에 걸쳐 진행되었으며 이명박 정부의 언론탄압과 언론장악의 실상을 진단하고, 정부여당이 추진하는 언론관련법이 언론자유와 민주주의에 어떤 영향을 미칠지 전망해보는 자리였다. 특히 지난해 촛불집회 이후 본격화된 인터넷 상의 표현의 자유에 대한 비상식적인 통제와 압박에 관해서도 심도 깊은 논의가 진행됐다.
지난 4월 27일 서울 정동 프란치스코 교육회관 강당에서 진행된 3차 토론회 <사이버모욕죄, ‘표현의 자유’ 사망선고!>에서는 ‘사이버모욕죄’ 도입과 ‘인터넷실명제 확대’를 골자로 하는 정보통신망법 개정안과 ‘휴대폰 감청법’, ‘국정원 강화법’으로 불리는 통신비밀보호법 개악안 등 이른바 ‘사이버통제법’의 문제점, 방송통신심의위의 ‘편향심의’를 통한 ‘네티즌 탄압’ 문제도 함께 다루어졌다.
이날 토론회에서 참석자들은 최근 ‘미네르바 무죄 판결’을 계기로 재차 논란이 가열되고 있는 인터넷 상의 ‘표현의 자유 훼손’과 ‘정보인권침해’의 문제점을 들여다보고, 정부 여당이 추진 중인 사이버모욕죄 도입 철회를 촉구하였다.
이어 열린 <MB정권의 언론탄압과 민주주의의 위기 : 종합토론>에서는 공동주최단체 대표들이 토론자로 나와 ‘민주주의와 언론’, ‘표현의 자유와 인권’ 등 우리 사회가 현재 직면한 과제들에 대한 심층 논의를 통해 언론현업인과 시민사회의 역할과 과제, 구체적인 대응방안을 모색했다. 이날 종합토론회에는 이준희 한국인터넷기자협회 회장이 참석했다.
